1. Travel instructions
Chilton is the most southerly parish in Oxfordshire.
There is easy access North and South from the A34 which divides the parish
into two parts, on the west there is Harwell campus, the Primary school and
the Garden Centre, on the east there is the church, pub and older
houses. There are 3 large roudabouts and a bridge across the A34.
- Coming from the North along the A34
Take the exit to Chilton along the slip road to a large roundabout,where you
take the second exit, then pass the pedestrian traffic lights, to turn left at
the signpost 'Chilton Village only'.
- Coming from the East over Hagbourne Hill
Take the first exit at the large roundabout, pass the pedestrian traffic lights, turn left at the signpost 'Chilton Village only'.
- Coming from the Sooth along the A34 from Newbury
At the top of the slip road from the A34 at Chilton, you must turn left,
at the roundabout go round to the 2nd exit pointing to Chilton and Newbury,
go over the bridge, past the next roudabout,
ignore the exit to 'Chilton' and go on to the road with the sign pointing to the right 'Chilton Village only'.
- Coming from the Wantage and the West
Turn to the South at Rowstock Corner on the A4185, go up the hill past
the Harwell Campus, ignore the Newbury Road on the right which leads to the
Garden Centre, primary school and Housing estate on Chilton Field. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit to go over the bridge to another roundabout,
ignore the exits to 'Chilton' and the A34
go on to turn right on the road with the sign pointing to 'Chilton Village only'.
2. PARKING:
From "Chilton Village Only" Sign to the Church
This road turns right and you can see the
church ahead of you. Take the single lane road on the right before the church which leads
to a Car Park for the church, village Hall and Recreation field.
Visitors children are welcome to use the Parish swings and other
toys.
3. Tower entrance; use the back entrance to the graveyard, follow the church path round to the church extension built in
the 1970s, go through the kitchen to the vestry and up the new (in 2000)
metal spiral staircase (12 steps) to the ringing chamber.
4. Toilet entrance is the door adjacent to the tower entrance door
5. The 1st Aid Box is on the wall above the sink in the kitchen.
6. The upper floor room of the church extension is available for ringers use;
the coat hooks are just inside on the left hand wall, the list of bell weights is on the notice board on the right.
Mobile phone reception is usually adequate near the window of this room if you
need to phone emergency services, when you should give the church address as
Chilton, near Didcot postcode OX11 0SH.
7. Before Ringing please take off the clock hammer, see notice on wall to left of window.
Please also apply the Sound Control by releasing the string next to the clock hammer.
8. Bells are DOWN, The tenor rope is that just before the door to the extension room,
the treble is the one just to the right of the light switch.
9. After ringing please ring the bells back down, put back the clock hammer and the sound control.
10. Refreshments can be bought nearby in the
'Rose and Crown' pub
(drinks and bar snacks) about 5 minutes walk along Main Street,
or during the weekdays daytime (open ~10am to 6pm) at the
'Chilton Garden Centre'
on the other side of the A34.
